WEEE policy & secure disposal

How we handle laptops at end of life under the UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2013.

1. What WEEE means for your laptop

The UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013 require waste laptops to be kept out of general refuse and routed through approved recovery channels. A laptop that is beyond economic repair, or that you simply no longer want, is classed as WEEE the moment you decide to discard it.

2. Our role

PostMend Ltd accepts laptops from customers either alongside a repair booking or as a standalone disposal. Each device is logged against your account, securely wiped where storage is still functional, and passed to an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (AATF) for material recovery and recycling.

We are registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier, broker and dealer under reference CBDU640200.

3. Secure data wipe

  • Functional drives are wiped using a multi-pass overwrite that meets the NCSC Lower-Level sanitisation standard.
  • Drives that cannot be wiped (failed, encrypted-and-locked, or physically damaged) are physically destroyed and shredded.
  • A free data-destruction certificate is available on request, referencing the device serial number and the wipe / destruction method used.
  • You remain responsible for backing up any data you wish to keep before sending the device.

4. Consignment records

Every disposal generates a hazardous-waste consignment note identifying the equipment, its weight, the originator (you), the carrier and the receiving AATF. We keep these notes for the statutory period and can provide a copy on request to support your own environmental reporting.

5. Household drop-off alternative

If you would rather not post the device, household WEEE is accepted free of charge at any local-authority Household Waste Recycling Centre under the Distributor Take-Back Scheme. We can also point you to the nearest scheme participant — just contact us.

6. Producer responsibility

PostMend does not place new electronic equipment on the UK market, so we are not classed as a Producer under the Regulations. We act solely as a service provider routing end-of-life devices to compliant treatment.

7. Personal data

Any personal data we process in connection with a disposal is handled under our Privacy & Data Handling policy. Consignment notes are retained for the statutory period; account records follow the retention schedule in that policy.
